The Dead Pearl Diver, 1858 (2015)
Polypropylene Plastic, Newsprint, Polyurethane, Generative Software, Digital Projection
18' x 8.5'
In part, this piece explores my apprehension of the quest for artificial intelligence [ the perfect pearl ].
The faceted structure references the fragmented polygonal digital source of the projected image while folding in the alabaster material of classical sculpture. The moving images consist of 3d scans of my wife and I assuming similar poses to Benjamin Akers' sculpture of the same name. Lost to the depths, the image distorts in the underwater current littered with biological debris.
